Since I had already tested so many other types of mouthpieces, to be honest after seeing the design of this one I did not even bother to put it high up on my list of products to test. It was not a MAD (Mandibular Advancement Device), so you did not insert it into your mouth and have it attach to your jaw.
My initial reaction to reading how it works was that it was not going to work! I explained to my wife my initial reaction from seeing the product, eventually we both built up our excitement enough to the point of making the purchase.
I am going to spoil the surprise and tell you I was completely wrong and blown away by the positive results. As usual, everything is documented in my sleep journal so I can keep track of all my testing and notes.
The Technical Stuff
The Good Morning Snore Solution is a TRD (Tongue Retaining Device) and works by attaching to your tongue and holding it forward. Unlike a MAD device, there is no attachment to the jaw and no moving your jaw forward.
The product works by directly controlling the tongue itself, the tongue cannot slip towards the back of the throat and create vibrations which causes snoring. The majority of people snore due to the tongue slipping back and blocking the airway. If you fall into this majority, there is a high probability this product will work for you.
The front part (tip) of the product you insert into your mouth has a little suction cup that sticks onto the top of your tongue. As you wear it your lips will be open and the outer part of the device will sit between your teeth and outer lips. There is not really much in your mouth which takes up space as it rests on the outside of your teeth like a pacifier.
This is another one size fits all device. There is no need for measurements or adjustments. We have a great house to try this in, our regular readers know we test all products on my wife and I, and if need be our daughter!
A TRD (Tongue Retaining Device) In Depth
There have been many government studies done on the effectiveness of TRDs.
Studies have shown that those wearing TRDs significantly improved their sleep and had less apneic events throughout the night.
One of the most authoritative studies was done over a period of 5 years and had positive results as well. Snoring was found to have decreased by 61% for the patients. That’s a remarkable sign for TRDs!
MAD devices are much more common, however TRDs have proven to be just as effective.
MADs usually require more care, adjustments, fittings, and many times cause me pain if I purchase one that is not fitting properly or that applies too much pressure.
TRD devices do not have this problem. All of the negatives for a MADs, do not apply for TRDs.
I do not have to make any adjustments, I have no jaw pain since the device is not attached to my jaw, and there is no need to take any special care for the product.
For most people the core issue of snoring comes from the tongue. A larger tongue, larger tonsils, or increased fatty tissue in the upper airway all create issues when trying to sleep. In my case, I have a larger than average tongue for my mouth.
A TRD attacks these primary causes. By holding the tongue in place, the size of the tongue, size of the tonsils or size of the throat will not matter. The TRD will create the space you need to breathe properly throughout the night.
I ordered one for my wife and I. They have a nice deal, where if you buy two the second one is only $30. If you buy one the total is $99.94, and for two you get the price of $129.94. So I saved $69.94 by getting one for my wife and me. Great deal by the company.
I received the usual email saying thank you for buying and I got the product fairly quickly too. It took only 5 days after I ordered for it to get to my house.
They have a 30-day return policy, so getting it quickly is important, this gives you more time to test it.
The packaging was standard, with the instructions inside. It also came with a denture tablet by Polident. Great addition because it is so easy to clean with that and you can use it after 10 minutes.
I put the Polident in some water, then dropped the mouthpiece in there with it. I used cold water because the instructions explicitly state not to use hot water. The material it is made of did not feel cheap and felt sturdy.
It is soft and antiallergenic as well. It is smaller than I expected! My wife and I looked at each other wondering if this was going to work!
The shape seems weird when you hold it, but as you will see below after placing it in my mouth it felt fine.
To get it properly fitted inside my mouth I had to pinch the tip of the product and suck at the same time. This caused a suction to occur on the tip and when I pushed my tongue against it, it stuck.
Then I closed my mouth around it just like a pacifier. I looked at my wife and she had done the same. It was more comfortable than I thought it would be.
It was great having a device that did not take up space in my mouth. Having it attached to my tongue felt strange at first, but I quickly got used to it. I could adjust the suction if I wanted to.
All you have to do when placing it on your tongue is either suck harder for it to have tighter gripping on your tongue, or if you suck gently it will grip a little less. I went for more gripping, I felt it was better to go for stronger than have the chance of it falling off with less grip.
At this point, my wife and I were a little less skeptical since it worked very well with keeping my tongue in one position.
I did think my tongue would have a hard time moving around and falling to the back blocking my airway.
When I woke up I felt great. This thing worked fantastically! When my wife woke up after me, I asked how she felt and with a surprised look on her face she said she felt great too.
I woke up to use the bathroom twice like I normally do, and did not hear her snoring at all.
Our energy in the morning confirmed this. I did have some soreness in my tongue, which my wife did as well. I assume this will go away with time as it usually does for other devices.
Once the mouth gets used to what you are wearing, normally after a week the soreness goes away.
It also could have had something to do with the tightness of the gripping I used. I think because I tried to put the thing on almost as tight as possible caused my tongue to be sore.
With less grip, it should make a difference in the level of soreness you feel.
The Good Morning Snore Solution has two options on their website. You can buy one for $99.94 or get a “family pack” of two for $129.94. There are different color options too, but you don’t have the choice to select what you get – the United States and Canada get blue, and the rest of the world gets clear.
They have a 30-day return policy which is nice, so if you don’t like it you can send it back for a total refund.
You must begin the return process you have to notify them within 30 days of your purchase, and they must receive the item within 45 days of your purchase.
Since it’s my favorite product I kept it and have no experience on returns.
My Last Words
When I first received it, I was not sure how it was going to work, much less rank among all the other anti-snoring products I used. After one night of using Good Morning Snore Solution, it shot up the rankings straight to the top. My wife agreed with me, this turned out to be one of her favorites as well.
We got a third vote in the house – our daughter. She loved it too and said she didn’t hear either of us snoring. The entire house loves it! What I really like about it, is that it does not force your jaw into any uncomfortable or unnatural positions.
Your mouth can be in the position it feels most comfortable while using this. There is no jaw soreness, no aching, both of which can really wear me down after a while. I would pair this with another device that you can breathe through your mouth with.
The perfect combination for when you have sinus congestion or allergies flaring up. The only downside is the price, but if you have a wife like me who snores, that brings the price back down to a very reasonable level.
UPDATE: This is definitely one of the best, if not the best one I have ever tried. It really is in a category all its own. After using it for a week, my mouth is completely used to it, I definitely am not snoring (my wife has woken up multiple times in the night and not heard a thing) and every morning I feel amazing. If I do not have my sinuses clogged up, this is my go-to device.
It has so many advantages, and if you are frustrated with uncomfortable or intrusive mouthpieces after a week of using it I barely even know I am wearing it. I highly recommend this, as it is one of my favorites – safe, comfortable and incredibly effective.
